In this edition of the 40 Questions series, Dr. Jerry Kimble tackles two highly debated topics of Christian theology, church membership and the discipline.  The author himself states that, “This book is intended to assist Christians, pastors, and church to rightly understand and apply biblical truth regarding church membership and church discipline.”[p. 9]  This book gives a substantial treatment to both topics. The stated goal of the book is to help pastors and churches think through the practical ramifications of both practices.

This work, as all the others in this series that I have encountered, offer a very well-balanced perspective of all points of view.

The book is divided into three sections: general questions about membership and discipline, general questions about church membership, general questions about church discipline. The sections on membership and discipline are further subdivided by theological questions, ministry questions, and practical questions. I was very pleased with the presentation and each chapter is written with numerous references to provide for further study, if one so desires.

As with the other titles in this series, this book is well-organized and provides questions for reflection at the end of each chapter.  It is not meant to be a detailed study into the topic, but rather a very good introduction and provides resources for further study.  Rather than merely providing an opinion, all the works in the 40 Questions series allow the reader to gain a better understanding and formulate their own opinion.
