If you are looking for just another discipleship book, then this is not the book for you.  In this book, Robby Gallaty (Senior Pastor, Brainerd Baptist Church, Chattanooga, TN) creates a roadmap for us as we follow Jesus’ command to make disciples.  Growing Up takes the reader to the next step from understanding the biblical mandate to make disciples and provides practical examples of how to put them into practice.

Growing Up is comprised of 10 chapters, divided into 2 sections.  Section One (chapters 1-3) looks at the need for making disciples.  Chapter 4 looks at how we, as disciplers, can become more godly.  Section Two (chapters 5-10) details what Gallaty refers to as CLOSER (communicate, learn, obey, store, evangelize, renew).  These chapters provide aids to help the reader develop a closer walk with Christ.

The main thrust of the book is the concept of a D-Group.  Just as Jesus had a close relationship with Peter, James, and John; D-Groups consist of three to five people meeting weekly together.  The entire discipleship process is outlined in the book’s appendices.

To me, chapters 5-10 were meaningful in that they reinforced some of the disciplines necessary to help us grow in our spiritual walk.

I would recommend this book for anyone wanting to be a mentor/discipler.  Read this book with a highlighter in hand.  Mark it up, write in the margins, investigate how you can apply these principles.  By putting these skills into practice, one can make a great Kingdom impact.
