One of the great challenges in the church is how do we raise up and train the next generation leaders. In his book, The Mentoring Church, Phil Newton (Ph.D. Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, Senior Pastor of South Woods Baptist Church) looks at a biblical model of leadership training, mentoring.
Newton devotes separate chapters looking at the biblical model starting with Jesus’ pouring His life into His apostles and moving forward with Paul as mentor. He then looks at mentoring in the 16th – 20th centuries. He concludes his works by sharing four mentoring models and also provides a template for training future leaders.
I enjoyed this book because he backs up everything biblically. By doing so he provides a solid framework from which churches can apply his concepts. I would encourage all church leaders to read and apply this leadership training model.
